Hash is made from trichomes: the tiny, crystal-like structures on the surface of cannabis flowers where cannabinoids and terpenes are concentrated. When you collect those trichomes and press them together, you get hash.<\/p>

The basic principle hasn’t changed in hundreds of years. What has changed is the precision of the methods used to separate trichomes from plant material, and the diversity of end products that results from different approaches.<\/p>

All hash starts with trichomes. What makes each type different is how those trichomes are separated from the plant, and whether they’re collected dry, in water, or by hand.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Where hash comes from<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The three main producing regions shaped the styles you’ll still find today.<\/p>

Morocco<\/strong>\u00a0– specifically the Rif Mountains in the north – has been the dominant source of hash for European markets for generations. Traditional Moroccan hash is made by dry-sifting dried cannabis over fine screens, collecting the powder (known locally as kif), and pressing it into slabs. The result is typically golden-brown to dark brown, with a spicy, earthy aroma. Most pollen hash sold in Europe today follows this tradition.<\/p>

Afghanistan and Pakistan<\/strong>\u00a0produce a darker, denser style. The resin content is higher, the aroma earthier and more intense. Afghan hash is often made by hand-rubbing fresh plants – a method called charas – or by dry-sifting and pressing with more heat and pressure than the Moroccan approach. The texture tends to be softer and more pliable.<\/p>

Lebanon<\/strong>\u00a0produces a golden, slightly sticky hash with a distinct sweet character. Lebanese hash fell out of the mainstream for years due to political instability in the region, but it’s had a resurgence as interest in traditional production methods has grown.<\/p>

The most common style in the European CBD market. Dried cannabis material is sifted over screens to separate trichomes from plant matter. The collected powder – which you’d recognise as kief in a grinder – is then pressed into blocks or slabs.<\/p>

The quality of pollen hash depends heavily on the screens used and how many passes the material goes through. A single pass produces a rougher product with more plant material mixed in. Multiple passes through progressively finer screens give a purer, more concentrated result.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Bubble hash<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Bubble hash is made using ice water. Cannabis material is submerged in ice-cold water and agitated, which causes the trichomes to break off and sink to the bottom. The mixture is then filtered through a series of progressively finer mesh bags – the “bubble bags” that give the method its name – and the collected resin is dried.<\/p>

The finest grades of bubble hash – typically collected from the 73-120 micron bags – can be close to pure trichome heads. Lower grades contain more plant matter and produce a darker, less refined product.<\/p>

Well-made bubble hash has a sandy, slightly waxy texture and melts cleanly when heated, which is where the term “full melt” comes from for the highest grades.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Charas<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Charas is the oldest hash-making method still in use. It involves rubbing fresh, living cannabis plants between the palms to collect resin directly from the plant surface. The resin is then rolled into small balls or pressed into sticks.<\/p>

Because it’s made from living plants rather than dried material, charas retains a different terpene profile than pressed dry-sift hash. The aroma tends to be more complex, with a fresh, floral character alongside the earthy base.<\/p>

Authentic charas comes from the Parvati Valley in India and surrounding Himalayan regions. It’s hand-produced, labour-intensive, and relatively rare in the European CBD market.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

CBD hash vs CBD flower<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Hash and flower are different to use, not just different to look at.<\/p>

Concentration.<\/strong>\u00a0Hash is more concentrated than flower because trichomes are separated from the plant matter before pressing. A gram of good hash contains a higher density of cannabinoids and terpenes than a gram of flower. This means you use less of it to get the same effect.<\/p>

Aroma and flavor.<\/strong> Hash has a distinct character that doesn’t quite match flower from the same plant. The pressing process and, in some cases, mild heat application change the terpene profile slightly. Hash tends toward deeper, earthier notes. The terpene profile<\/a> of a specific product tells you more than the type label.<\/p>

Handling.<\/strong>\u00a0Flower needs to be ground before use. Hash is broken apart by hand – a small piece of pollen hash crumbles easily when warmed slightly between fingers. Bubble hash behaves differently depending on its grade and moisture content.<\/p>

How you use it.<\/strong> Both work in joints, pipes, and vaporizers, but the approach differs slightly. Hash in a joint is typically crumbled along the length of the roll.
