About The Bulldog
From Oudezijds Voorburgwal to a famous name
Henk de Vries opened The Bulldog on 17 December 1975 at Oudezijds Voorburgwal 90, in the middle of Amsterdam’s red light district. The premises had been his father’s sex shop, and the idea was a living room for the neighbourhood. He named it after his dog Joris.
The Australian artist Harold Thornton painted the whole front, and the mural soon made the place a regular stop for backpackers and tourists. Since then The Bulldog has grown into several coffeeshops, cafés and a hotel in Amsterdam, and the de Vries family still runs the business.
The logo with the bulldog in a round frame appears on clothing, souvenirs and accessories. The accessories are what we stock, mainly metal grinders with the logo embossed on the lid.

Was The Bulldog the first coffeeshop in Amsterdam?
That is often said, but there are older places. Sarasani in Utrecht opened in 1968 and Mellow Yellow in Amsterdam in 1972. The Bulldog is, however, one of the oldest still run by the same family.
How is The Bulldog grinder built?
It is made of metal and has four pieces, with a kief chamber at the bottom and a lid held in place by a magnet. It measures 50 mm across and the bulldog is embossed on the lid.
What does the logo show?
A cartoon bulldog in a round frame. It is the same figure you see at the brand’s places in Amsterdam and on the lid of the grinder.
