If you have ever rolled with a standard paper filter, you know how it can be: warm and slightly harsh smoke. An activated carbon filter gives cooler and milder smoke, and Purize is one of the best-known brands. Interest in activated carbon filters has grown across Europe in recent years, and Purize is one of the most requested.

We have now restocked and expanded our Purize range. Below you can find out what is available, how the filters work and which size suits you.

At a glance

  • Purize makes activated carbon filters in Großräschen, Germany, and was founded in 2016.
  • The filters contain activated carbon from coconut shells and have ceramic caps at both ends.
  • Activated carbon mainly binds substances in the gas phase of smoke. Particles and tar are affected much less.
  • XTRA Slim (6 mm) fits slim papers, Regular (about 8 mm) wider papers and BIG Size (14 mm) very wide papers.

Why we carry Purize

Purize is a German company founded in 2016, with its production in Großräschen in Brandenburg. The filters are made entirely in Germany, with activated carbon from coconut shells and ceramic caps instead of plastic ones.

We do not add products just to fill out the range. When we find a brand that takes quality seriously and knows its field, working with them is an easy decision, and it is the same way we think about our own products.

How activated carbon filters work

A standard paper filter filters almost nothing. It keeps the mouthpiece open and stops herbs from ending up in your mouth. Activated carbon works differently. It is a very porous material with a large internal surface, and as the smoke passes through, some substances stick to that surface.

Purize uses activated carbon from coconut shells. According to Purize, the carbon filters impurities from the smoke while keeping the flavour and aroma, and many people find the smoke cooler and milder.

Research gives a more nuanced picture. A 2008 review of studies on charcoal filters in cigarettes found that activated carbon reduces several substances in the gas phase of smoke, but has little effect on the particles, where the tar is. A carbon filter changes the smoke, but it does not make smoking harmless.

The other thing that sets Purize apart is the ceramic caps. Many carbon filters have plastic caps, while Purize uses ceramic, which handles heat well. Because both ends look the same, you can insert the filter either way round, which is one less thing to think about when you roll.

Which size do you need?

Size matters. If the filter is too narrow, the draw becomes too tight, and if it is too wide, it does not sit properly in what you roll.

  • XTRA Slim (ø 6 mm, 27 mm long). Fits standard slim papers such as RAW Slim and OCB Slim. It is the most common size and the one most people start with.
  • Regular (ø 8.3 mm, 35.7 mm long). A wider filter with more activated carbon than XTRA Slim. It fits wider papers and pipes that take 9 mm filters.
  • BIG Size (ø 14 mm). For really big rolls, for example when several of you are sharing. It needs wide papers and comes seven to a pack.

What is in the range

Purize XTRA Slim

Our most popular filter. It fits the papers most people already use, and if you have never tried an activated carbon filter, it is a good first choice.

Purize Regular

Available in several colours, including white, pink and Organic. The specifications are the same whatever the colour: ø 8.3 mm, 35.7 mm long, coconut shell activated carbon and ceramic caps.

Purize BIG Size

New in the range. The filter is 14 mm wide and made for those who roll really big. It needs wide papers and comes seven to a pack.

Purize Prerolled Cones XTRA Slim, 50-pack

Cones of 109 mm made from unbleached paper, with an XTRA Slim carbon filter already in place. The paper is a chlorine-free plant fibre paper of 14 g/m², so thin you hardly notice it. The 50-pack suits you if you use cones often.

Purize Prerolled Cones Regular, 3-pack

The same idea in a smaller pack, with 109 mm cones of unbleached paper and a Regular filter in place. You can find all the filters in our activated carbon filter range.

Cones or rolling your own?

If you roll your own, you get more control over how tightly you pack. Ready-made cones give the same result every time instead, with the same shape and the filter already in place. They are handy when you are in a hurry, or if you simply do not like rolling. Both options use the same type of carbon filter, so it mostly comes down to what you prefer. You can find ready-made cones in our cone range.

A few practical tips

Carbon filters work best when what you roll is not packed too tightly. If the draw feels heavy, the problem is usually the filling rather than the filter. Make sure the filter sits flush with the paper before you roll it up and twist the end.

Store the filters in the resealable bag they come in. Activated carbon absorbs moisture and odours from the air if the bag is left open, and the filter then works less well over time. Purize also recommends using each filter only once.

What does an activated carbon filter do?

Activated carbon is porous and binds some substances from the smoke, mainly in the gas phase. Many people find the smoke cooler and milder. Particles and tar are affected much less, and the filter does not make smoking harmless.

Which Purize size fits slim papers?

XTRA Slim, with a diameter of 6 mm, fits standard slim papers such as RAW Slim and OCB Slim.

Can you reuse a Purize filter?

Purize recommends using each filter once for the best flavour.

Where are Purize filters made?

In Großräschen, Germany, where the company has its production. Purize was founded in 2016.

Does it matter which way round the filter goes?

No. Both ends have ceramic caps, so the filter can go in either way round.
