What Is CBN?
CBN is one of the oldest documented cannabinoids in cannabis research. It was originally identified in the late 1800s, when British chemists succeeded in isolating CBN from hashish. At that time, the chemical makeup of cannabis was still largely unknown, and the isolation of CBN marked the start of a more structured scientific exploration of the plant’s active compounds.
Early Discovery and Scientific Development
The first successful isolation was carried out in 1896 by Thomas Barlow Wood, W.T. Newton Spivey and Thomas Easterfield. Their work laid the foundation for future cannabinoid chemistry, even though researchers struggled for decades to accurately determine CBN’s full chemical structure.
It wasn’t until the 1940s that Robert Sidney Cahn, a leading figure in organic chemistry, described CBN’s molecular structure in detail. His research confirmed that CBN forms when THC is exposed to oxygen and light, explaining why older cannabis tends to show higher natural CBN levels.
How CBN Forms From THC
CBN is not produced by the plant in the same way CBD is. Instead, it forms gradually over time through oxidation of THC. When cannabis is exposed to air, heat or UV light:
- THCA decarboxylates into THC
- THC slowly oxidises into CBN
This means older or poorly stored cannabis naturally contains more CBN than fresh material. Storage conditions such as humidity, temperature and light exposure therefore have a major influence on how much CBN develops.

Distinctive Characteristics of CBN
CBN interacts with both CB1 and CB2 receptors, though with lower affinity than THC. This dual receptor activity has caught the attention of researchers studying neurosignalling and immune-related pathways.
Laboratory studies have also highlighted CBN’s antibacterial potential, including activity against resilient strains such as MRSA. While research is ongoing, these findings make CBN an interesting cannabinoid in terms of future applications.

CBD is produced directly by the plant and not through degradation of another compound. It is especially abundant in hemp varieties cultivated for low THC content. Unlike CBN, CBD levels are highest in freshly harvested and well-grown plants.
