CBD Bioavailability - Why How You Take It Matters
Most people shopping for CBD focus on one number: milligrams. They compare products by strength and try to figure out if 10mg or 25mg is the right dose. That part matters, but it’s only half the picture.
The other half is bioavailability – the percentage of CBD that actually reaches your bloodstream and does something. And that number changes significantly depending on how you consume it.

What bioavailability means
Bioavailability is a pharmacology term for the proportion of a substance that enters circulation and is available to have an effect. A product with 100% bioavailability means every milligram you take reaches your bloodstream. In practice, no consumption method achieves that.
The reason varies by route. Some methods bypass the digestive system entirely. Others go through it and lose a large portion of the active compound along the way.
The first-pass effect
The biggest factor reducing CBD bioavailability when you swallow it is called the first-pass effect. When CBD is swallowed, it passes through the digestive tract and then the liver before entering the bloodstream. The liver metabolises a significant portion of it before it ever reaches circulation.
This is why a 25mg capsule and a 25mg vaped dose are not equivalent. The capsule delivers far less active CBD to your system, even though the label says the same number.
Consumption methods compared
Inhalation (vaping or smoking)
Bioavailability: approximately 30–50%
Onset: 2–5 minutes
Duration: 1–3 hours
Inhaling CBD bypasses the digestive system entirely. The compounds are absorbed directly through the lung tissue into the bloodstream. This gives the fastest onset of any method and the highest bioavailability.
Smoking CBD flower is a traditional and effective delivery method – the bioavailability numbers are the same whether you use a joint or a vaporizer. Vaping operates at lower temperatures and skips combustion, which some people prefer, but both methods get CBD into your system quickly and efficiently.
The tradeoff is duration. Inhaled CBD tends to have a shorter window of effect than other methods.
Sublingual (CBD oil under the tongue)
Bioavailability: approximately 13–35%
Onset: 15–45 minutes
Duration: 4–6 hours
CBD oil held under the tongue for 60–90 seconds before swallowing is absorbed through the mucous membranes directly into the bloodstream, partially bypassing the liver. The longer you hold it, the more absorption happens sublingually rather than through digestion.
The wide bioavailability range (13–35%) reflects how much variation there is in formulation and how people actually use it. A well-formulated oil with a quality carrier (like MCT oil) performs better than a poorly absorbed one. How long you hold it under the tongue matters too.
(capsules, edibles, swallowed oil)
Bioavailability: approximately 6–15%
Onset: 45 minutes to 2 hours
Duration: 6–8 hours
Capsules are the least efficient way to take CBD. The first-pass effect hits hardest here — the liver metabolises a large portion before it ever reaches circulation, so you’re paying for CBD that your body largely doesn’t use. Studies consistently show oral bioavailability at the bottom of all methods.
The slow onset makes dosing difficult. It can take up to two hours to feel anything, which leads people to take more while waiting, then end up having taken too much.
Capsules are convenient and discreet, but from a value perspective they’re a poor deal compared to oil or inhalation. If you’re buying CBD for cost-efficiency, capsules are the last method to consider. The same amount of CBD in an oil held under the tongue will deliver meaningfully more to your system for less money.
Taking them with a fatty meal can help somewhat, as CBD is fat-soluble, but it doesn’t change the fundamental issue with oral bioavailability.
Topical (creams, balms, liniments)
Bioavailability: negligible systemic absorption
Onset: 15–45 minutes (local)
Duration: 2–4 hours (local)
Topicals work differently from all other methods. CBD applied to the skin does not reach the bloodstream in meaningful amounts. Instead, it interacts with cannabinoid receptors in the skin, muscles, and surrounding tissue.
This means topicals are not useful for systemic effects. What they are useful for is targeted, local application – muscle soreness, joint discomfort, tension in a specific area. The effect stays where you apply it.

What this means for dosing
If you’re new to CBD, the method you choose should match what you’re trying to achieve:
Fast, on-demand effect: Vaping or smoking CBD flower gives the quickest response. Useful if you need something that works within minutes. Our guide to dry herb vaporizers covers the hardware side if you’re using flower.
Consistent, longer-lasting effect: Sublingual oil or capsules are better suited for daily use where you want stable levels throughout the day. CBD Oil gives you more control over dose than capsules.
Local, targeted use:Â Topical products like CBD liniment are the right tool when the goal is a specific area of the body rather than a general effect.
Because bioavailability varies so much between methods, direct dosage comparisons across methods don’t really work. 25mg vaped is not the same as 25mg swallowed. Start lower than you think you need when trying a new method and adjust from there.
Does the form of CBD affect bioavailability?
The type of CBD extract also plays a role, though it’s secondary to the consumption method.
Full-spectrum and broad-spectrum extracts contain minor cannabinoids and terpenes alongside CBD. Some research suggests these compounds work together in ways that may affect how CBD is processed – sometimes called the entourage effect.
CBD isolate is pure CBD with no other cannabinoids. It’s more predictable in terms of what you’re taking, and easier to dose accurately, but lacks the additional compounds found in whole-plant extracts.
For a deeper look at how isolate and distillate differ, our comparison article covers the practical differences for different use cases.
A note on product quality
Bioavailability numbers are based on the assumption that what’s on the label is actually in the product. That’s not always a safe assumption in the CBD market.
An oil that claims 1000mg CBD but was poorly manufactured or stored may deliver significantly less. Lab reports (COAs) from third-party testing are how you verify that what’s in the bottle matches what’s on the label.
All our products are GMP certified and third-party lab tested. The lab reports are available on each product page.
FAQ
What is CBD bioavailability?
Bioavailability is the percentage of a substance that reaches your bloodstream and is available to have an effect. For CBD, it varies significantly depending on how you take it — from around 6–15% for swallowed capsules to 30–50% for inhaled CBD.
Which method of taking CBD has the highest bioavailability?
Inhalation – either vaping or smoking – has the highest bioavailability at approximately 30–50%. It also has the fastest onset. The tradeoff is a shorter duration of effect compared to oral methods.
Is 25mg of vaped CBD the same as 25mg of a capsule?
No. Because of the bioavailability difference, 25mg inhaled delivers more active CBD to your system than 25mg swallowed. If you switch methods, expect to adjust your dose accordingly.
Do topical CBD products reach the bloodstream?
Not in meaningful amounts. Topicals stay local, they interact with receptors in the skin and surrounding tissue rather than entering circulation. This makes them useful for targeted application but not for systemic effects.
Why is swallowing CBD less effective than vaping it?
Because of the first-pass effect. When CBD is swallowed, it passes through the digestive system and liver before entering the bloodstream. The liver metabolises a large portion before it ever reaches circulation. Inhalation and sublingual absorption bypass this process.
